Camiguin: Born of Fire, Cooled by Water

Advertisements

Camiguin was always a “someday I’ll go” destination for me. It was quite unexpected when I was suddenly assigned to take a team to the place as part of an R&R trip. A great opportunity!

Five days is more than enough time to enjoy Camiguin, which lies in the Bohol sea and is near Mindanao. At that time, there was no direct flight from Manila so an entire day was spent traveling. But it was all worth the trouble.

So what did I like most about the trip?

LOVELY  HOTEL

Hotel Noveau is probably one of the most beautiful local resorts in the area. Surrounded by pools that can be used up to late night, the resort was perfect for drinks and hanging out, whether in the day or in the night. There’s a spa, a fitness area and enough outdoor space to host several events at once. Food was good, too!

NON-STOP SWIMMING

They say Camiguin is born of fire due to having seven active volcanoes in its vicinity.

But aside from seven volcanoes, Camiguin has about 7 waterfalls and seven hot springs. So much water to cool that fire. So many opportunities to swim and bask in the sun!

At the Blue Soda Water Pool, it is said the water is fizzy and bubbly like soda.
Mantigue Island with a fantastic view of the mountains.
White Island is a tiny, pristine white sandbar with no shade and bright blue waters. Unfortunately, it was stormy at the time of my photo but it is quite picturesque on most days.
The Sto. Nino Cold Springs with fresh, cool water to swim in.
The Tuasan Falls is smaller than the popular Tibawan Falls but is easier to visit.
Katibawasan Falls is a popular site to visit in Camiguin.

Another must visit water spot is the Ardent Hot Spring.

SACRED SPOTS

It is said that when Mt. Hibok Hibok erupted in the 1800s, it destroyed this town, sinking the town under water. Local authorities later put up the cross at the town’s sunken graveyard to make sure the tragedy is not forgotten. People can actually dive around the area of the Sunken Cemetery.
The Guiob church ruins is what is left of the church after a volcanic eruption in the 1800s.
The way up to the peak of Mount Vulcan steps is marked by the stations of the cross at certain levels. It has become a pilgrimage site for Catholics during Holy Week.

COOL RESTOS

Travelers have many options for good food in Camiguin.

The Beehive has interesting rustic interiors with fresh food and homemade ice cream.

There are also restos like La Dolce Vita (an Italian restaurant), J&A Fishpen (a fresh seafood place) and the Mayahay Cafe (a nipa hut style restaurant). A few tips – try the local delicacies like Pastel, Sinaging and Kiping.

Kiping is a thin, crispy local delicacy.

All in all, it was a great trip!
